The purpose of the project is to introduce energy saving technology of collection and utilization
of energy potential of landfill gas (LFG) formed due to anaerobic decomposition of organic waste at a
solid waste disposal site (SWDS) of the Thessaloniki city. The solid waste disposal site is located in the
village of Tagarades.

Details of events/modernization:

The project provides for the construction of gas collecting wells for capturing landfill gas. The
captured LFG – through local transport and treatment system – will be supplied to cogeneration
equipment for producing electricity that will be supplied into grid or for own needs.
Utilization of landfill gas will enable the production of about 41 ths MWh of electricity per year.
GHG emission reduction will be achieved through methane emission avoiding. It is assumed that the
annual emission reduction will achieve the value of 127 126 t CO2-eq. for the first commitment period
and 158 901 t CO2-eq. for the period following the first commitment period.

Goal of Project

The purpose of the project is to introduce energy saving technology of collection and utilization
of energy potential of landfill gas (LFG) formed due to anaerobic decomposition of organic waste at a solid waste disposal site (SWDS) in the city of Athens, Greece.

Details of events/modernization:

The project provides for the construction of 1300 gas collecting wells for capturing landfill gas
which should cover 95 % waste collected. The captured LFG – through local transport and treatment system – will be supplied to cogeneration equipment for producing electricity that will be supplied into grid or for own needs. Utilization of landfill gas will enable the production of about 185 ths MWh of electricity per year which meet the installed capacity of 23,5 MW. GHG emission reduction will be achieved through methane emission avoiding. It is assumed that the annual emission reduction will achieve the value of 431 903 t CO2-eq. for the first commitment period and 451 077 t CO2-eq. for the period following the first commitment period.
